News reported from Guinea yesterday indicate that at least one person was killed and three others seriously injured when a grenade was thrown into a group of fans watching Guinea and Ivory Coast African cup of Nations’ match. The game ended in a one all draw.
According to officials in Guinea, one person was killed and three others seriously injured, including the person who threw the grenade, as a crowd gathered in the capital, Conakry to watch the Guinean national team take on Ivory Coast on TV.
Mamadou Alpha Barry, national police spokesman, told newsmen that the incident occurred around the same time that the Ivory Coast grabbed a late equalizer to snatch a point but conflicting reports say the explosion from the grenade happened “by accident” when Guinea went 1-0 up in the first half.
Although the attack was confirmed by police, but residents say that up to three people were killed in the explosion conflicting police report which says it can only confirm one casualty.
It is believed that the fans had gathered in a soccer bar in Conkary to watch the game, as electricity had been knocked out in the surrounding neighborhood.
